Our production methods
Spirulina is a type of green algae that grows in specific conditionsSpirulina grows with strong sunlight under the special conditions such as high temperature and strong alkalinity which is almost inhabitable for many other animals and plants. This natural ability to thrive is the secret to Spirulina’s unique properties not found in other life forms. There are lakes that satisfy several of these conditions where Spirulina can be found growing in the wild.
About our farms
DIC Spirulina is farmed in manmade ponds using cultivation methods based on photosynthesis. We select our production locations with a temperate climate and relatively low annual rainfall.
Features of our farms
- We were first in the world to succeed in industrial mass-production of Spirulina in 1977
- We integrate all production processes end-to-end in our farms
- We select only algae strains that have superior safety and effectiveness
- We ensure robust testing for residual pesticides (no pesticides are used in our farming)
Our top-standard production locations
Earthrise Nutritionals, LLC is a DIC group company, which is located in Calipatria, California. Today, their farm is the world’s largest spirulina farm (180,000 m2 in total). Earthrise® is the pioneer of spirulina production and research. Earthrise® provides the highest quality spirulina by culturing, filtering, dehydrating, and drying their own products. Earthrise Nutritionals selects the best quality algae from all over world, and grows them naturally without using agricultural chemicals. Earthrise Nutritionals achieve international standards in their products, such as FSSC22000, ISO9001 (international standard for quality assurance), HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point), and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice), through thorough quality control and management.

What makes DIC Spirulina unique
We only use spirulina species that are superior in safety, quality and efficacy. There are many brands of spirulina, which have different nutritional values, safety, and quality. DIC Spirulina has been researched at universities, hospitals, and public institutions to confirm its high standards. Also, our Spirulina is certified ISO (international standard of the guarantee of quality), HACCP (general hygiene management production system), GMP (appropriate production model) and goes through a rigorous quality control system.
DIC/Earthrise® spirulina donated to children in need aroud the world.
“Spirulina is an interesting food, rich in iron, high in protein, and suitable for children” which WHO once commented to our Spirulina. “DIC Spirulina” was sent to children of Chernobyl and the children of the Croatian refugees who suffered from malnutrition.
Produced by an automated production line in our facility with rigorous in-line quality and safety measures in place.
DIC has been the pioneer in commercial spirulina production (since 1970) and one of the world’s largest suppliers in the world. For more than 40 years, we’ve maintained our high quality and honest practices.
What is high quality spirulina
“To grow high quality spirulina, it is crucial that you select the best algae that would best fit in the climate, and be attentive to the quality of water as well. In that respect, the area where Earthrise Nutritionals produces their spirulina is top quality. Colorado River, which is their main source of water for the farm, enables them to grow high quality spirulina with rich minerals from the river. In addition, they have been researching in this field for approximately 40 years. They have created an environment that is best for spirulina through their many years of research and data.”
Phycology Professor DR.AMHA BELAY
Dr. Ahma Belav started his research on spirulina in 1965 at a university in his motherland, Ethiopia. Upon graduating, he studied abroad in the U.K., and received his doctorate degree. After returning to Ethiopia and teaching biology at a university, he moved to California State Universty to teach. He joined Earthrise® in 1969. Upon leaving the company in 2016, he has worked in cooperation with the U.S. government, U.S. universities, and NASA and has engaged in biology research.
